Cyber-security experts are warning about scams following a recent IT outage. Although there’s no proof that the outage was due to hacking, some people are trying to exploit the situation.

Cyber agencies in the UK and Australia are advising caution with fake emails, phone calls, and websites pretending to be from official sources. CrowdStrike head George Kurtz urges users to verify they are talking to real company representatives before downloading any fixes.

“Bad actors will try to exploit such events,” Kurtz said. “Check CrowdStrike's blog and support channels for official updates.

Cybersecurity expert Troy Hunt also warned that scammers take advantage of high-profile events like this. He mentioned that the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is alerting about fake software claiming to fix issues, while the UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has seen an increase in phishing attempts related to the outage.

Hackers are known to use major news events to trick people, similar to how they exploited fears during the Covid-19 pandemic. Researchers have noted a rise in fake CrowdStrike websites, aimed at tricking IT managers and the public into downloading harmful software or revealing personal information.
