Pavel Durov, the CEO of Telegram, was arrested on Saturday night at an airport near Paris. The 39-year-old billionaire, who founded the popular messaging app Telegram, is accused of not doing enough to prevent criminal activities on his platform. French authorities have charged him with failing to control organized crime, drug trafficking, fraud, cyberbullying, and the promotion of terrorism on Telegram.

Telegram is used by around 800 million people, especially in Russia and Ukraine. After hearing about Durov’s arrest, the Russian embassy in France immediately asked for more information and demanded that his rights be protected.

    Who Is Pavel Durov?

Pavel Durov first became well-known in 2006 when he created VKontakte (VK), which is often called Russia’s version of Facebook. However, after a dispute with the Kremlin-linked owners of VK, Durov refused to block the page of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. This led to his departure from VK, and in 2014, Durov left Russia altogether.

Since leaving, Durov has obtained citizenship in St. Kitts and Nevis, a Caribbean island, and in France, where he has lived since 2021. He founded Telegram in 2013, promoting it as a platform that supports free speech and is open to everyone, regardless of their views. According to Forbes, Durov's net worth is around $15.5 billion, making him one of the wealthiest people in the world.
